Essential

Running Essential

NTKN Essential needs the following to run:

  • A web browser capable of running Flash 9
  • Access to ports 14005 and 14006 on our server (es.needtoknownews.com) for TCP connections

You can launch Essential using the "Launch Essential" link on the upper right corner of this web site.

Using Essential

Use the Settings button to set up filters for news stories or indicators, to adjust the alert volume, and to change the font size. We store your settings on our servers, so they are accessible no matter where you are logging in.

Use the Search button to get a list of stories that contain specific terms in the title, body, category or author of a story. This looks only for messages that have all the search terms, so if the search field has "A B" and only the title box checked, then it will articles whose title contains both "A" and "B." The search terms are case insensitive and may appear as part of a word, so searching on "Eur" would match "European" and "euro"

You can adjust the relative sizes of the economic indicators and news stories sections by dragging the bar between them.

Troubleshooting

"I don't see anything"

That sounds like difficulty running Flash. You can get the Flash player from Adobe's web site , and they have support information for Flash.

"I can't log in. It shows current progress, then brings me back to the login screen."

That sounds the client can't reach our server. Often, firewalls cause this by blocking outgoing connections. The client needs to be able to make outgoing connects to retrieve data. Other possible causes are difficulty with your network provider, or our servers are down.

"The username/password which you have entered is already in use."

Each id is allowed to log in only once. The system detected that this user is already logged in. Log out of the first instance if you want to run it someplace else.

"I click on a headline, but I don't see any article."

More than likely you have a popup blocker enabled, and that is preventing the article window from appearing. We especially noticed this on Safari (both Mac and PC), where the default settings block the article window.

The audio installer is available at:

Troubleshooting

If you get a message about the configuration being incorrect when you try to run audio client, you need a couple more pieces of Microsoft software, the Visual C runtime and Microsoft DirectX. Download and install them from the following links:
